As Billboard magazine so aptly says, "Rock's longest, strangest trip, the Grateful Dead were the psychedelic era's most beloved musical ambassadors as well as its most enduring survivors…" Started in San Francisco in 1965, the band has since attained cult status in which "Deadheads" were known to happily tour along with the band and exist in a unique culture all their own. The band has had a long list of members, with the Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, Bob Weir, Vince Welnick, Brenty Mydland, Ron McKernan, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Jean Godchaux and Keith Godchaux among them. Their discography includes more than 140 albums, and their sound is often described a jam band and improv.

I've always interpreted this song to be about people who live their lives in a higher form of consciousness. For some, that may come from deep reflection and contemplation, others meditation, and other through the use of psychedelics. But outside our normal day-to-day routines exist a higher form of being - that's what this is about.
