The song is about a dying relationship which both parties feel letting go is not the best option. It's reminds of of the fun times in the beginning, how u gradually fell in love. The second verse talks about the strain and the present unhealthy occurrences in the relationship. It's impossible to believe how far they fell. Sometimes hanging on seems like a good option but it's not. most times we are scared to start over so we try to glue a shattered glass, we forget it can't look beautiful once glued it's forever gonna be ugly and rough. The song says it all the best thing is to let it, let it be, be yourselves. Forget about each other let the ashes fall, leave it to the breeze.

I have listened to this song a dozen times. I love it and its bittersweet meaning. Hold back the river is referring to someone at there worst, about to cry. Its reffering to how we push people away when all in all, all we need is someone. James is telling the person to hold back their tears, because at that moment at the breaking point is when we really see who we really are. He is saying dont be afraid to cry because he is going to see who you really are, and look in your eyes and be there for you. No matter how lonely you get. "let us hold each other"
