Satchmo, as he was known onstage because of his large mouth, was an American jazz legend. Iconic and an influential figure he came to prominence in the 1920s as a highly talented and creative trumpet and cornet player. Now recognized as Louis Armstrong he was a founding influence in jazz. His infectious smile and huge lungs meant he could powerfully improvise solo performance and bend lyrics to acclaim. With his instantly recognizable and deep gravelly voice Armstrong was an accomplished singer, demonstrating great dexterity between singing and playing trumpet effortlessly, improvising all the way.
