Emerging as one of the original "grunge" groups from the Seattle music scene of the 90s, Pearl Jam has moved on to attain international status as one of the top rock bands of all times. Founded in 1990, from "the ashes of Mother Love Bone," the group built its current sound around the unique and unforgettable vocals of lead singer Eddie Vedder. The original lineup included Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, Mike McCready, Matt Cameron, and Dave Krusen. They cut their first album within a year, and alongside Nirvana, the group introduced their genre to the mainstream. Membership has changed, but the band's following only continues to grow, and they continue releasing new material regularly.
Thoughts on Songs with Pearl Jam

I agree with VickyD that the most heartbreaking part of the song comes right after this verse, but this paints a picture in my mind that is impossible to shake. An innocent moment - a date with your sweetheart - quickly turns into a nightmare that is very obviously not going to end well. Such a sad song.

This is probably the most heartbreaking part in a song. The description is incredibly vivid. To be in the middle of the road, holding someone's head and realizing that the person is sharing his/her last words and the kiss that will come between the two will be the last one. There is no turning back from that.
