R.E.M. was an American rock band from Athens, Georgia, that was formed in 1980 by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist/backing vocalist Mike Mills, and lead vocalist Michael Stipe. One of the first alternative rock bands, R.E.M. was noted for Buck's ringing, arpeggiated guitar style, Stipe's particular vocal quality and obscure lyrics, and Mills' melodic basslines and backing vocals. R.E.M. released its first single—"Radio Free Europe"—in 1981 on the independent record label Hib-Tone. The single was followed by the Chronic Town EP in 1982, the band's first release on I.R.S. Records.

"Pale Blue eyes" is about how the main artist, Lou Reed, Had a really serious girlfriend, Shelley Albin, and they were good for awhile then thins started to go bad . The argued a lot and shelley was his whole world but she ended up getting married not to him but to someone else. So supposedly he had an affair with her but he knew it was wrong so they ended it . Overall this song is about how you can love someone so much but there is pain that comes along with it. And sometimes, affairs happen. Sometimes, you start to not like the person you once loved. The person you thought of as your " mountain top".
