The punk rock band Rise Against came together in 1999 in Chicago. Its current members are Tim McIlrath on vocals and guitar, Zach Blair on guitar, Joe Principe on bass and Brandon Barnes on drums. The band's first two albums, The Unraveling (2001) and Revolutions per Minute (2003) gained success as released on independent labels and lead to the band signing with Geffen in 2003. Their 2004 major label debut, Siren Song of the Counter Culture, lead to mainstream success and several hit singles. Rise Against has gone on to release three more albums with Geffen, including 2014's The Black Market.

Drug abuse (possibly heroin) as the core of someone's existance and the only pleasure life has to offer him, stands in a symbolic and literal way as well. In a literal, well, let's face it, people like that exist all around us, and in a symbolic, in way that someone's addiction (could be a lover? some other mental intoxication of any kind) is what keep him going
