I saw a clip from one of Taylor's concerts where she described this song perfectly. Its about that one person in your life that you aren't with because maybe it didn't work out or they were ad for you. It's about maybe not quite being okay with that door being closed yet and the internal struggle of wanting to reach out to them but knowing you shouldn't.

Having been a "good girl" all year long (and perhaps longer), the young lady of the song wants her boyfriend to commit to marrying her by giving her an engagement ring for XMAS. She buries her request for the ring in a list of impossible gifts which her "Santa Baby" can't afford. He CAN afford an engagement ring; the young lady hopes to tease her lover into proposing marriage if he really does believe in her as much as she believes in him, her desired future husband, her "Santa Baby."
A tornado of bittersweet memories curling up inside you and sluice out in order to form their frame of the ended relationship. The good times, the bad times but the essence that is left in the end, will always be probably the bitter side of the coin, as you cannot help but to imagine how far could you have gone together, is some factors where slighty different...
I first get to meet that situation through a movie of Fassbender's when I minor character had problems with her fiance, as it seemed to her that when they were the two of them alone, it was boring as hell for him. So then, I was driven to the thought that, you can be "alone together" with someone, pretty easy, if you let it happen, day by day.
It describes the feeling, the dangerous yet charming one, of knowing that the other person might be a huge tornado of trouble for you, yet that appers to be a plus in the overall sexiness picture of him/her. You cannot know where it will all end, but you can guess it will not be a boresome ride.
