UK punk band
The Damned are a punk rock group originally from Croydon, England, a suburb of London, who were formed in 1976. Despite being one of the definitive early punk bands they were also one of the most ambitious; with their later albums moving away from the breakneck garage sound of their debut and taking in elements from goth and psychedelia to prog and metal. They are notable for being the first of the British punk bands to release a single, put out an album, and tour the United States. Their debut album, Damned Damned Damned, was released six months before The Sex Pistols' debut, Never Mind The Bollocks.
Thoughts on Songs with The Damned

Well, this is a tough one, because the lyrics are gorgeous- but this song's lyrics hint at demonic possession, or hypnotism, at the very least. To "Stand in line like a parking meter" can signify someone about to be acted upon, for a parking meter is an object that cannot flee from the place it's at. A man "who's awfully nice" but "isn't there" could be either the adversary or a hallucination suffered by a person afflicted with multiple-personality disorder. To be a "fly in a cup of tea" is to trapped in something deadly, though that death will be slow. The "other life that was borrowed the other night" sounds like possession.
