Yelawolf<\/a> blends hip-hop and country, which provides us a different perspective on blue-collar life. Many country artists tend to romanticize small-town life and blue-collar workers, but there are a few emerging artists who seem to be singing another tune. Yelawolf is one of them. His latest song, \u201cAmerican You<\/a>,\u201d seems to deconstruct a life of hard labor as well as the middle class who looks down upon them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Break it Down to Find the Meaning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first two verses and the chorus seem to tackle the yuppies. In small towns, they\u2019re seen as the good ol\u2019 boys, the kind who Never miss a Sunday service, never got tattoos,<\/q> and who got a house on a hill, big news, that\u2019s a big deal.<\/q> The narrator says that Every time we drive by wavin\u2019, I see right through,<\/q> meaning that they are holier than thou attitude may be an act in order to get up in the small-town world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third verse appears to be focusing on the blue-collar workers who are looked down upon by the yuppies. With all these tattoos that you got, it f*****\u2019 offends them,<\/q> the song quotes, and yet these people seem to be the more honest out of the two groups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All they need is a house with a nice pool<\/q> as well as a 6-pack and some good marijuana,<\/q> and they\u2019re all set. They work slave labor all day, with a night at the factory,<\/q> and a daytime job at McDonald\u2019s, and despite their perceived disobedience by the middle class, they\u2019re the hardest working people who don\u2019t beg for a better job or quit. You\u2019ve been given nothin\u2019 but s***\/But you take it \u2018cause you\u2019re patient in this prison,<\/q> the narrator explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reason why they\u2019re trapped in this job may also be also due to them quitting their education for love. And they told you not to go get married\/But you went and did it anyway.<\/q> Odds are, these people have families they\u2019re raising as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAmerican You\u201d is definitely a fresher take when compared to songs that make hard labor seem exciting, and it\u2019s worth a listen if you\u2019re into this kind of music.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n
