Black and White Lyrics

I used to watch Reading Rainbow while eating snacks in 2nd grade
It taught me to not only "read between the lines", but to redefine the meaning of that term
And I learned at a young age that love is a two-way street and unfortunately you drove past me
You see...
Though my father walked away, and my family felt broken
The spirit of hope walked among us like a long-lost friend...

My favorite childhood show was Courage The Cowardly Dog
It was about a young pup facing his fears, in a home, in the middle of Nowhere
Protecting only his owners and himself
And I didn't Identify with the dog, but with the monsters in the show
Because as time passed, I realized my childhood was the dog and I was losing...
And I couldn't defend myself from growing up
But I could stop myself from growing apart
So I over-indulged in love
And you ran away from me like a cowardly dog would a beast...

Hope still walks around my life now
A little older, a bit wiser
It reminds me
That even though love is the goal
It's the journey that makes the movie worth watching
You see...
My sisters bring to mind a spirit of faithfulness that not even Yellowstone could compare
And my friends don't reside in a different state
In fact
Our mentalities are so much alike
That we could be compared to peas and carrots
Even though we don't eat our vegetables like our parents told us to

This poem isn't something that should be cherished
It's just something that should be said
Because when I think about how long I've been thinking
It becomes almost overwhelming these few repeating thoughts in my head:
Am I happy?
Am I a good person?
Am I being true to me?

I sleep with fans on high, and an electric blanket on 6 to remind myself
That I'm the most comfortable when I live in this gluttonous dichotomy I've built
And when I watch tv
I'm either watching cartoon adult shows
Or philosophical videos about my childhood heroes...

Reading Rainbow taught me to read between the lines
Even when there are no words
And Love taught me that those lines mean nothing
If they're not read by the people you care about...
And if there's one thing that I know that I've taught myself
It's that I prefer to drink my soda
Before I eat my salad
