Independence Lyrics

I woke up on the train
You asleep in my arms
You were quiet at the party
Looking at your phone
Or looking at me
And the straight guys all drank til they got louder
But not you, you're talkin' philosophy
With that guy with the unbuttoned shirt

And it's your first time in new york
And you love these bearded queens on their bicycles
You hate the crowds, you love the food, you hate the heat
And my friends can't stop talkin'
About how life has always been a struggle
And we're all caught in a machine that's crushing us
Called capitalism

So we search each other's face
There, in the seat on the train
Looking for signs that we are ok
That we are safe
And our faces are mirrors
Reflecting back a question
That's never answered, only amplified
A signal, amplified

And the train is elevated
Snaking through skyscrapers and fireworks
Exploding above us as we come around the corner
There is green, now blue, pink, gold
Silver sparkles rain down
And on the platform the passengers line up
To peek through the window as it comes
The finale
Fireworks like atoms exploding with a purple nucleus

And the mirrors of our faces have shattered
And the splinters are reflecting the colors
Of the sky
