My perspective of the lyrics of this song; Guy falls in love with someone like a close friend and had a romantic relationship. He ends up moving on, and finds that his former love has become the love of his life, and only knows it know-after the fact. So all of this forms a sort of bittersweet appreciation for the lover he never fully appreciated when he was with her
