David Bowie Overview

David Bowie (birth name David Robert Jones) was an English singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He was born on January 8, 1947 in Brixton, London and died of liver cancer at age 69 on 10 January 2016 in his New York City apartment. He passed two days after the release of his 27th album, Blackstar. Bowie has been active in the music industry since 1962 and had sold 100 million records worldwide. Bowie's music general sits in the rock/pop domain, although he is a musical innovator with a highly varied discography. He is also known for his baritone voice and androgynous appearance. Bowie's ground-breaking fifth album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972) was ranked by Rolling Stone as the 35th greatest album ever made. His 'Berlin trilogy' of albums, Low, Heroes, and Lodger, all reached the top five in the UK and are critically acclaimed to this day. His commercial peak came in 1983 with the release of Let's Dance, which featured several hit singles, including the title track, Modern Love and China Girl.
