The song is sung by a fan, singing about the fictitious band, "Bennie and the Jets". In Bernie Taupin's own words, the song is a satire of the early 1970's, greed and glitz of the period's music. It is also about the lead singer "Bennie", who is called "keen, weird, and wonderful", whose wardrobe contains many flashy outfits. "Electric boots, a mohair suit, etc"
This rock filled tune in Taupin's writing, isabout a prostitute, who is, as the lyrics suggest, a bitch who's not bathed in years and works a poor job.
The song's about a ragged Alcoholic who drinks for fun and f*cks his landlady, paying her in quote unquote, human kindness and liquor, while dreaming of vineyards.
