Byzantine cover Byzantine by Pinback

One of my early faves, this one seems to be talking about groups of neutrals, trying to live in the midst of an uprising empire. Great song.

Seville cover Seville by Pinback

Easily their saddest and most depressing song. It happens to be my favorite, as the lyrics are beautiful. It is most likely talking about the town of Seville, and a devastating plague that swept through it. It talks about a little girl, Sheena Bella, who is shown mourning the loss of most likely her parents, all while waiting for herself to die too. It could also be thought of as a Jewish family being held at a concentration camp, and Sheena's parents are killed, and that she is next. A very sad song indeed, but gives us a perspective of children during plagues, and their innocent minds crushed with the sad truth of death. Yet once again, Christians have no fear of this, as we will be whisked away in the twinkle of an eye. (Not preaching, just sharing some thoughts :)

Penelope cover Penelope by Pinback

This is a peppy song, with a sad yet cute meaning. It's about a goldfish named penelope, who the person in thought is concerned about dying, struggling, etc. This is shown in the lyrics "don't want to see you floating upside-down, on the top of your bowl when i come down to visit you," and also "deep into the forest, let you feel the raindrops soak into your red scales." and lastly, "eliminate the need for water. I think the song is talking about a child who really loves his goldfish. Possibly a childhood story of Rob's.

Loro cover Loro by Pinback

I think this is one of Rob's good ol' little meaning songs, personally. The first lyrics, "and the ripped ones say goodbye," could be interpreted many different ways as well.

Tripoli cover Tripoli by Pinback

I think the song is about the sad and overwhelming inevitability of death, in the lyrics "sad i'm gonna die," and, "hope it's gonna happen later than i think," point to the common want of more time on earth. But, (i aint preaching anyone,) but us Christians have no fears of death.
