Dinah Washington was born Ruth Lee Jones on August 29, 1924 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. By 1939 she was already singing and playing piano in the church choir. Her jazzy but crystal clear style epitomized the Queen of the Blues, bringing her an American Grammy award win as jazz singer. Best known for singing early R&B classics such as her hit singles Call Me Irresponsible and What a Diff'rence a Day Makes and her talents for timing, and panache.
