Mainly, it talks about distance. The distance that two people have with each other, without the need of any physical distance to be related. He talks about how he doesn't know this other person any longer and they might as well be in different towns because their thoughts and their connection is so different and has suffered too many changes. Another lovely side is that he doesn't make it too obvious from the beginning. The title of the song is "We Might as Well Be Strangers" which doesn't give too much away but leaves a rather mysterious side to it. And he ends up tearing everything apart when he says, "I don't understand your heart. It's easier to be apart." It is a sad song about separation and the hurt that comes with it.
