Born in Seymour, Indiana in 1951, John Mellencamp went from a rebellious teen to a musical star by 1982, with his album American Fool. Though his original album, released under the name Johnny Cougar in 1976 was essentially a flop, American Fool hit number one thanks to the track “Hurts So Good.” Mellencamp continued to release albums, with his 1983 release bearing his full name, John Cougar Mellencamp, as he had wanted all along. His most successful album, Scarecrow, was released in 1985. In 2014, he signed a lifetime recording contract with Republic Records, releasing two more albums later that year.
